Actionstep pricing in NZ, explained properly

Actionstep shows no price on its own NZ pricing page or anywhere else. What is public about the plans, and what a small NZ firm can expect to pay.

The short version: Actionstep publishes no price anywhere, as at the 22 September 2026 check of its own pricing page, not even with New Zealand picked from its own region dropdown. Practice Management is sold per user plus implementation fees, through a certified partner, on a quote. Legal Accounting, the trust-accounting module, is stated as North America only. What follows is what's actually public, and the build-on-Microsoft-365 alternative for a firm that wants a number today.

The plans that exist, without a number attached

ProductWhat it costsWhat's public
Practice ManagementPriced per user plus implementation fees, quote onlyMatter and case management, client intake, document management and assembly, billing, workflow automation, core accounting tools
Legal AccountingPriced per user plus implementation fees, quote onlyComprehensive cloud accounting, stated as available in North America only
Add-ons: Builder, Capture, Trace, AcumenPriced per user, quote onlyDocument automation, client data collection, AI time capture, embedded analytics, sold as extensions once the base platform is running

Actionstep's own pricing page, checked 22 September 2026, carries a location selector for US, UK, AU, NZ and CAD and shows the identical result for all five: no dollar figure, no currency symbol, and a "Request Pricing" button. Capterra's New Zealand listing for Actionstep carries the same gap, no starting price anywhere on the page. Implementation is handled by certified partners rather than Actionstep directly, and the page mentions financing options for the implementation cost without naming one.

Founded here, priced globally

Actionstep was founded in Auckland in 2004, and its first paying customers were a New Zealand construction franchise and a New Zealand law firm. It has since expanded into Australia, the UK, Canada and the US, and Serent Capital, a private equity firm, took a majority stake in 2020. That history is worth knowing, because it explains why a NZ-founded product now runs a single global sales motion, one quote conversation per firm, rather than a published NZ price list the way a smaller local vendor might.

Where a firm needs to push for a number

Two spots. First, the per-user rate itself is negotiated, so a firm should ask for the rate at its actual seat count in writing before assuming any number quoted informally holds. Second, implementation is a separate line item done by a certified partner, and that fee, plus how many hours of it your firm actually needs, is the part most likely to move the total bill more than the per-user rate does. Ask both questions on the first call, not after signing.

Who this suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a firm comfortable running a proper sales conversation and buying a platform sized to its actual matter volume, rather than picking a tier off a page. It doesn't suit a firm that wants to compare three vendors on price in an afternoon, since none of the three in this series publish one, or a New Zealand firm assuming the Legal Accounting trust module applies here without confirming that directly, given the page states it as North America only. How it compares side by side with LEAP and Smokeball is worked through in Actionstep vs LEAP vs Smokeball.

Or build the register on what you already pay for

For a firm already on Microsoft 365, the matter list, client intake and fee tracking that a practice system like Actionstep provides can be built directly on the licence already paid for: a matter and fee register on Dataverse, NZ$32.40 a user a month, with Power BI Pro at NZ$22.60 for the two or three people who read the report. A build like that runs $8,000 to $18,000. It does not replace trust accounting. A Power Platform build covers matters, time, documents and reporting; the trust ledger has to stay in a product that meets the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act (Trust Account) Regulations, whether that's Actionstep's own module where it applies, or a dedicated trust accounting system. The full comparison across the market is in what law practice management software costs a small NZ firm.

Common questions

How much does Actionstep cost in New Zealand?

As at the 22 September 2026 check of Actionstep's own pricing page: no figure at all, in any currency, even with New Zealand selected from the page's own region dropdown (US, UK, AU, NZ, CAD). Practice Management is stated as "priced per user plus implementation fees", sold through a certified implementation partner after a quote conversation, not a self-serve checkout.

Is Actionstep a New Zealand company?

It was founded in Auckland in 2004 and started with a New Zealand construction franchise and a New Zealand law firm as its first customers. It has since expanded into Australia, the UK, Canada and the US, and private equity firm Serent Capital took a majority stake in 2020, so it now sells and prices itself as a global platform rather than a distinctly NZ product.

Does Actionstep do trust accounting for a NZ law firm?

Actionstep's own site states its Legal Accounting module, the one built around comprehensive trust and firm accounting, is only available in North America. A New Zealand firm evaluating Actionstep needs to ask directly, in the demo, exactly how trust accounting is handled here, and should not assume the North American module applies.
