Deputy pricing in NZ, explained properly

The short version: Deputy prices in Australian dollars, not New Zealand dollars: as at the 22 September 2026 check, deputy.com/nz/pricing returns page-not-found and Deputy's own FAQ says New Zealand accounts are billed in AUD. Its Australian pricing page lists Lite at $6.75, Core at $8.75 and Pro at $13 AUD a month per user, excluding tax, with a $30 AUD minimum monthly spend per invoice. Deputy's own payroll and HR add-ons aren't sold into New Zealand at all.

The three tiers, decoded

All three plans are billed per user per month, in Australian dollars, excluding tax, whether paid upfront or in monthly instalments. Deputy applies a minimum monthly spend of AUD $30 per invoice on the monthly Lite, Core and Pro plans, a rule in place since 1 September 2025, so a very small team pays that floor rather than the raw per-user total. Where the tier boundary actually bites

The gap between Core and Pro is scheduling depth, not headcount: auto-scheduling and demand forecasting sit on Core, while Pro's extras (custom access levels, single sign-on, dedicated pay centres) matter more to a multi-site operator than a single-location team. Award Interpretation, the feature named on every tier, is built for Australia's modern awards system, a set of industrial instruments New Zealand doesn't have, so that part of the Core and Pro upgrade may do less work here than it does across the Tasman. The bigger boundary sits outside the tier table entirely: Deputy's own Payroll add-on ($5 AUD a user a month) is listed as available in Australia only, and its HR add-on ($3.50 AUD) in the US, UK and Australia only. New Zealand isn't named in either, and deputy.com/nz/payroll-software returns the same page-not-found as the pricing page. Buy Deputy for rostering and time and attendance; the payroll still has to come from somewhere else, such as PayHero or Smartly.

Who this suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a multi-location retail, hospitality or care roster that needs shift-based scheduling, time clocking and labour compliance tracking, and is comfortable being billed in Australian dollars. It doesn't suit a firm that wants payroll and rostering from the one vendor, since Deputy's payroll story stops at the Australian border, or one that wants a New Zealand dollar invoice with no exchange-rate exposure on a bill that moves with the AUD.

For a firm already on Microsoft 365, a roster, timesheet and leave register can be built directly on the licence already paid for: on Dataverse at NZ$32.40 a user a month, or on SharePoint lists and Teams Shifts where the licence already includes them, with Power BI Pro at NZ$22.60 for the two or three people who need the report. A build like that runs $8,000 to $18,000, priced in New Zealand dollars from the start. It does not run payroll: PAYE, KiwiSaver, holiday pay under the Holidays Act and payday filing stay in a compliant payroll product.
